London Shop Fronts

28 Apr

I’ve decided to continue with yesterday’s theme of blogging about other blogs. As the name suggests ‘London Shop Fronts’ is a blog about London Shop Fronts. Blogger Emily Webber posts a photograph of a different London shop front each day. The concept is so simple yet it makes for a surprisingly addictive read. Here are a few of my favourite shop fronts.

Perhaps it is because i’m a woman that I am instinctively drawn to a shop that sells not only shoes but bags as well. I like the fact that one sign was obviously not enough.

“No, you can’t eat it here. We only do take-away”

I am only mildly ashamed of how much I am liking the combination of lime green exterion and wood panelling interior.

All the photos on the blog are available to order. If you are interested you can email Emily for more information.

Illustrated in full colour throughout

28 Apr

I stumbled upon the amazing blog of Brent Hardy-Smith. Entitled ‘Illustrated in full colour throughout’, his aim is to collect 100 illustrations which will form part of his body of research for a Masters in Design and Art Direction. Here are a few of my favourites.

I’ve Got Your Number

24 Apr

I think the concept behind this list is fairly self explanatory. If you haven’t figured it out by the end of the post then…

myaimistrue

They think that I’ve got no self respect but everything means less than zero

ONE- ‘One Crowded Hour’ by Augie March

But for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom

TWO- ‘Dirty Dream Number Two’ by Belle and Sebastian

I love you more in death
Than I ever could in life

FOUR- ‘Four Winds’ by Bright Eyes

A squatter’s made a mural of a Mexican girl,
With fifteen cans of spray paint and a chemical swirl.
She’s standing in the ashes at the end of the world;
Four winds blowin’ through her hair.

FIVE- ‘It’5!’ by Architecture in Helsinki

Could’ve sworn that wine
And one and four made two,
But it’s 5, It’s 5

Seven swans, seven swans, seven swans.
I heard a voice in my mind,
I will try, I will try, I will try.

EIGHT- ‘Eight for Eight’ by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and the Upsetters

We danced in the moonlight at midnight
We pressed against back doors and wooden floors
And you never faked it

Tell him what we said ’bout ‘Paint It Black’
Rock ‘n Roll is here to stay

Come inside where it’s okay

Bend your body to the heavens above
Don’t get drunk, don’t get dry

He was deep like a graveyard
She was ripe as a peach
And how could he have known?
That she was only fifteen

Pants

22 Apr
Jeans

I’ve been looking for a new pair of blue jeans for quite some time now and finally managed to find a suitable pair while I was in Melbourne over the weekend. I shouldn’t be at all surprised by this as I have always found Melbourne shopping to be endlessly more fruitful than Sydney shopping.

I found my jeans in the treasure trove that is Out of the Closet Clothing. They have lots of vintage dresses, shirts, pants, skirts and shoes as well as some great new stuff based on popular styles from the 60s and 70s. I got two pairs of pants; one pair of navy blue cords and my blue jeans, both high wasted with wide legs. They are made by Pop Boutique who have an online store and ship worldwide for only £3.50. I was told by the friendly shop guy (who I bonded with over our mutual love for Elvis Costello) that these pants are worn in Life on Mars so as you can imagine that they have a definite 70s vibe about them.

For those of you who (like me) aren’t game to buy pants before trying them on, Out of the Closet Clothing have two stores, one on Flinders Street in the city and the other on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy.

Love Hurts

13 Apr

This is so absurdly good that I can no longer keep it to myself. Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice doing the Everly Brothers/Roy Orbison/Gram Parsons song ‘Love Hurts’. I was lucky enough to witness a performance of this last Tuesday night at Jenny’s Sydney show. Definitely a tear jerker.

And because one video is never enough- here is a live version sung by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.

Boots Around the Clock

13 Apr

I am craving boots of all kinds- Desert boots, Doc Martens, fringed boots, pixie boots, cowboy Boots, suede, leather, studs and buckles in black, red, tan and every other colour you could possibly imagine.

Collage

5 Apr

Due to last night’s excessive consumption of alcohol I cannot manage many words. This seemed like a suitable alternative. I am currently lusting after items such as these. Ten points to anyone who can guess who’s style inspired this collage. If you know me well this should not be too difficult a task.

Everything is borrowed

5 Apr

Am I imagining things or does M.I.A’s “Paper Planes” rip off “Straight To Hell” by the Clash? I feel as though I should have figured this out earlier.

Supergroup 101

4 Apr

A supergroup consisting of Elvis Costello, Jakob Dylan, Johnathan Rice, M. Ward, Jenny Lewis, Zooey Deschanel, Pete Thomas (drummer from The Attractions) and Tennessee Thomas (daughter of Pete) performing “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love & Understanding”- All my Christmases have come at once!

Blog Ideas

2 Apr

To prevent this from turning into a stream-of-consciousness type blog which contains unstructured rants, I am going to try a few things out. The idea is to have a number of weekly topics e.g. Interview a friend each Wednesday, review a CD/Book/Movie/Song each Friday, discuss an item of current affairs each Monday etc.
